TEMPLES IN THANJAVUR The palace built by the Nayaks and the Marathas is another attraction of this temple town. The masonry of the palace is highly appreciable. Brihadeswara Temple
The brahaadeswarar Thirukoil of king
raja raja cholan of the famous one and world known for the fantastic
gementrical architectres and sculptures. It is other wise called Tanjore
Periya koil. The best part about the temple is that it has been built
in a manner that the shadow of it never falls on the ground. The temple is
216 ft. tall. It is worth mentionable that as many as many as 74 temples dot
the landscape of Thanjavur. Vaitheeswaran Koil There are a few stone inscriptions of note in this temple and eight of such inscriptions relate to the period of the later Chola kings of Tanjore and the early Maharatta kings.Tirujnana Sambandar, Tirunavukkarasu, Arunagirinathar, Vaduganta Desikar, Sivajnana Desikar, Kumaraguruparaswami, Padikkasu. Tambiran, Chidambara Muni, etc., are the well-known saints who visited and sang in praise of this shrine in the past. |
