Warangal Fort The Fort is adorned with a temple in its middle and is renowned for its sculptures. The fort has 45 towers and pillars spread over a radius of 19 km, and a temple of Mother Earth called 'Swayambhudevi Alayam' in the middle. History of the fort dates back all the way to 13th century. The Warangal Fort was a huge construction with three distinct circular strongholds surrounded by a moat. Four paths with decorative gateways, set according to the cardinal points, lead to the center where a huge Shiva Temple once existed.
Though presently in ruins, Warangal Fort still boasts of the dexterity of artists of earlier times. On the brink of Ekashila (a hill rock), the Citadel appears diffused in the several layers. In the mid-13th century, the construction of this colossal structure was initiated by the Kakatiyan king, Ganapatideva. Replicas of these gates, made out of concrete, can be seen in various parts of Andhra Pradesh.
The visitors with interest in architecture, ancient history and ancient sculptures can study lot from this Fort premises. The loose ends of the edifice include commanding gateways and graceful towers that elevate to no less than 50 feet.The famous 'Ekasshila', a beautifully carved gateway located within the fort, symbolises the Kakatiya empire and Warangal even till date like Charminar does for Hyderabad.
The second wall is completely built of granite. Warangal Fort is also famous for some exquisite gateways that have become a symbol of Andhra Pradesh Tourism. Although most of the fort is in ruins today, but still Warangal fort is among the best attractions in Andhra Pradesh. Situated just 2 Km from the Warangal Railway Station, the fort is easily accessible from any part of the city. |
