Qutb Shahi Tombs

The Qutb Shahi Tomb complex houses about 30 tombs of both the rulers as well as those who were not related to royalty. Each tomb stand on a wide quadrangular terrace approached on all sides by flights of steps. Rising from 9 to 15 meters above the terrace, each tomb has a sarcophagus in the center which lies over the actual burial vault. Surrounded by balustrades with beautiful minarets at the corners, and overlaid with blue and green tiles, of which only a few pieces now remain, most of the Qutub Shahi tombs are graceful structures with intricately carved stonework. A total of seven rulers ruled the kingdom until its capture in 1687 by the armies of the Great Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. All the Qutb Shahis rulers were great patrons of learning as well as great builders. One of the first Muslim dynasties to rule the Telengana region, the Qutb Shahis ruled the Deccan for almost 171 years.

These architectural styles originated during the times of Ibrahim Qutub Shah and this school of art reached their zenith during the rule of Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah. The numerous tombs of the members of the royal family, laid beautifully on the sprawling gardens are worth the visit. Not only are they architecturally impressive, they also make a good picnic spot. Golden spires were fixed over the tombs of the Sultans to distinguish their tombs from those of the other members of the noble family. Qurans or the holy book of the Muslims, were kept on supports and readers recited verses from the sacred book at regular intervals.

The tombs, which have been silent spectators to the many developments in Hyderabad over four centuries, are open to visitors on all days except Fridays. The main body of the edifice is broad, rising 9 to 15 mt. above the terrace. Balustrades surround it with beautiful minarets at the corners. Rising to a height of 42.5 mt. with a large dome and 28 open arches, his tomb is one of the largest and most imposing of monuments. The rooms inside the smaller tombs are basically single-storied while the larger ones have two-storied structures.

The tombs are domed structures, which are built on an elevated square base surrounded by pointed arches. The Qutub Shahi Tombs are a perfect blend of Indian and Persian architectural forms, constructed in gray granite decorated with exquisite ornamentation. They are magnificent monuments of architectural excellence and stand as solemn reminders of the grandeur and glory of Golconda and the great kings who are buried here. This enormous complex of burial chambers stand on an elevated plateau. The most important tomb among the seven Qutub Shahi tombs are the one that was laid in the memory of Hayath Bakshi Begum.
