The Paigah Tombs situated at
Santoshnagar, 10 km from Charminar. Apart from the family of
the nizam, the highest ranking nobles in princely Hyderabad
were the Paigah nobles. Though these stunning tombs are
strewn over 30-40 acres, tombs of the Paigahas who had
married daughters of the Nizams and their spouses are
confined to a two-acre site. Beautifully carved with marble
inlay work, the Piagah tombs are one of the magnificent
pieces of art. Needless to say, they were close to the
Nizams and very powerful and influential, taking care of the
security and defense of the state.

The tombs are dedicated
to the Paigahas the consort of the daughters of the
Nizams and the daughters of the Nizams. The Paigahs
were also great patrons of fine arts, literature and
sports and commanded the respect of the rulers and
the ordinary people alike. The Paigah Tombs are the
burial chambers built for the family members of the
Paigahs. They were given the responsibility of
looking after the security and defense of the state. |

The Nizam conferred on him the
title of Shams-ul-umra, meaning the sun among the masses.
Tegh Jung was buried in 1786 at the entrance of the complex,
now known as Paiga tombs. The Paigah nobles were very
influential and they were assigned to look after the
security of the state. A marital tie between the Nizam and
the Paigahs further strengthened the bond between the two
families. |
