Mecca Masjid

The Mecca Masjid at Hyderabad is one of the largest mosques in the south of India. The Mecca Masjid of Hyderabad is located just 100 yards away from the famous and historic Charminar. This huge hall is 75 feet high, 220 feet wide and 180 feet long. There are seating arrangements at the edges of the pond and it is believed that if a visitor sits on it, the person will surely visit Hyderabad again. There is a room in the courtyard of the mosque that stores ancient and holy relics. The hall measures 67 mt. by 54 Mt.

It is a grand edifice with a huge courtyard which can accommodate nearly ten thousand men at prayer. Five curved facades were carved out of a single slab of granite. The prayer hall of the mosque consists of five aisles. The main hall of the mosque is 75 feet high, 220 feet wide and 180 feet long, big enough to accommodate ten thousand worshippers at a time. It took 77 years to come up as the magnificent edifice we see today. Like many other ancient buildings in the city, the mosque is a granite giant with awe-inspiring innards. History says that during the time when the foundation stone for the Mecca Masjid was laid down, the elder religious leaders were invited and it was stated that only the one who had never missed his prayers will have the privilege to lay the stone.

It is said that about 8000 workers had been employed to construct this grand mosque. The mosque took 77 years to be completed. In fact Muhammed Quli commissioned people to bring the sacred earth of Mecca. Hence this mosque is known as Mecca Masjid. Small red bricks believed to have come from Mecca are positioned above the central arch. It took almost 80 years for completion and is said to accommodate 10,000 worshippers. The octagonal columns on either side are built from single piece of granite with an arched gallery above it.
