Mahaveer Harina Vanasthali National Park

The park is in full bloom during monsoons when beautiful flowers of different colors blossom all around. The ground which has been utilized in creating this heavenly abode of diverse flowers and plants previously used to be a the privately owned hunting grounds of the Nizams of Hyderabad.  There are over 400 black bucks (Amtelope Cervicapara), about 500 Cheetals and large herds of wild boar. In fact, the park has estimated 400 deer in its area. Their main predator was the now extinct cheetah. Their glossy white dotted bodies, ranging from dark brown to black, accentuated by a white underbelly, their large lustrous eyes and mouth surrounded by white, are a study in contrast.

The park is famous for the endangered Black Buck, the state animal of Andhra Pradesh. The other species of animals commonly seen are Monitor Lizards, Mongooses, Porcupines and Hares besides a variety of Snakes. Most important attraction of this park is the endangered black bucks. located in the fringes of Hydearabd on the Vijaywada Road. The Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park is very well connected to the main city. The upkeep of the park is taken care of by the forest Department of the state. A small money is charged to enter the park and hire the vehicle.

This sanctuary was once the exciting 'Shikargarh' or hunting ground of one of the Nizam rulers. It has now been converted into a protected national park under the law. There are sheds for rest and observation towers for viewing the animals. Situated in Vanasthalipuram, at a distance of 15 kmsfrom Hyderabad, the park was established in 1975 and named after 'Lord Mahavira', to commemorate the 2500th birth anniversary of the prodigy.

It's there Common animals seen here are monitor lizards, mongooses, porcupines besides a variety of snakes. Several species of birds like Partridges, Quails, peacocks, Doves, pond herons, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants and birds of prey like kites, vultures etc are found here.  More than 80 species of migrant birds can be seen here. Another rare variety amongst birds is the Short-toed Eagle

The park looks picturesque in the monsoon with the golden and white flowers of these trees on the lush green carpet of grass. The forest Department offers audio-visual education on nature and wildlife and is supported by a good nature library. The national park provides a tour around the park in vans for those who are interested in seeing the wildlife from a nearer distance. The park is open on all days (except Monday), from 9am to 5 pm.
