Vijayawada TEMPLES ............................................................................................................................................................................ The Kanakadurga temple The temple, located atop the Indrakila Hill overlooking the beautiful River Krishna is a great center for pilgrims. It is 4 foot high and embellished with a lot of gorgeous ornaments and bright colored flowers. There are weapons in her hands and she is shown as piercing the demon with a trident. Lord Shiva is also worshipped here as Malleeshwara. The deity in the Kanakdurga Temple is referred to in the Vedas as well and is considered to be very powerful.
The festival of Dussera for Goddess Durga is celebrated here colourfully every year. It is said that the temple was visited by Adi Sankara who installed the Sri Chakra here. Therefore, the temple is regarded as an important temple. A large number of pilgrims attend the celebrations and take a holy dip in the river Krishna. This famous temple is on a hill connected by steps and a ghat road. Inscriptions of different dynasties are found in the temple. It is also believed that the spiritual leader Adi Shankara visited the temple, Kanaka Durga, the goddess of power, riches and benevolence is the presiding deity of Vijayawada. A large number of inscriptions that are attributed to different dynasties are carved on the walls of the temple. She decided to make this her permanent abode. The goddess then killed the demon and brought a lot of relief to the people. |
