Goa Goa is the smallest state of India, it attained state hood on 30th May 1987. It was separated from 25 year old union territory of Goa, Diu, Daman. Goa is situated in the western coast of Indian peninsula, on its north runs the Terekhol river which separates Goa from Maharastra. It is one of the most popular holiday destinations for European travelers. The Golden Goa is known for its exotic beaches and life style in the west coast of India. Panaji The administrative capital of Goa, famous for beaches, parks, cuisines, antiquities and nunnery. Marmagao is the harbor exports iron and manganese ore.
People and Culture Since it was formerly a Portuguese settlement people are much influenced with European civilization and culture. The languages spoken Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and English. In literacy the state record 77% (1991). Rivers Terekhol, Mandavi, Zuari, Chapora, Sal and Talpona weave their way throughout the state forming inland water ways adding romance and beauty. Sight Scenes Beaches, parks, deer park, botanical and rose gardens. Calangute is a holiday resort place and queen of golden beaches in Goa. The modern city is Vasco-da-gama, it is a tourists' shopping centre for Goan products. Temple and Religious Places Ponda, Vela, Molem are the places famous for temples, mosques and churches. The Basillica of Bom Jesus in Goa is one of the biggest Christian Pilgrim centre in Asia. Crops Cashew nut, coconut and rice. Industries Fertilizers, fish canning and distilleries (Liquor). Festivals New year and Christmas are the main festivals of this state. |
