Prakasam Barrage Leisure Spots The three canals associated with the barrage, run through the city of Vijayawada criss crossing it and giving it a Venetian appearance. The beautiful lake and its three canals that crisscross across the city gives Vijayawada quite the Venetian touch. Its panoramic lake and the three canals that run through the city give Vijayawada a Venetian appearance. This Completed in 1957, it helps irrigate over 12 lakhs acres of agricultural land.
One of the first major irrigation projects of South India, the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada was a complete success. This Road Bridge and modern regulator extends across the Krishna river and is considered as the one of the oldest irrigation projects of south India. The project is 120 km downstream project and above the prakasam barrage which goes waste into bay of bengal in august, september and october months in every year. This project brought Krishna delta into the most useful fertile valley. The impressive structure of the Prakasam Barrage stretches 1223.5 meter long across the mighty Krishna River. The dam, 1,290 metres long and 42 metres high, is proposed to be built across the river krishna at pulichintala village in guntur district and nemalipuri village on other side of the river in nalgonda district. The Andhra Pradesh Government later constructed a new regulator cum-round bridge that was named after Sri Tanguturi Prakasam, the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. |
